Tuning into live video streaming technology – Blacks Connect
Quick question: name two things that pop up? If you were on the cutting edge of technology you might have said either a Periscope or a Meerkat, because these are two apps that are creating something of a stir at the moment.

Essentially, both are live video streaming platforms allowing the user to record video from wherever they might be and the viewer to well, view, that video. Periscope has the added benefit of being integrated with Twitter which means you can instantly notify your followers who can join to view the video and also comment on it.

In a rather sappy manner, it also allows viewers to send ‘hearts’ which are meant to make the videographer feel all gooey inside about what a great job they’re doing and what great content this is – the more hearts you get, the higher they ‘flutter’ up on the screen. Give me strength.

But, can it be useful in the business world? To quote Ed Miliband, “Hell yeah”. Firms like Coreco are already using it to stream some of their sales meetings live – useful if you’re unable to attend in person I would think – while Blacks Solicitors will be testing it this month with our employment law team.

The beauty of course is that live video streaming allows you to be ‘there’ in real-time and gives you the chance to provide input as well. It’s not a catch-up days later but an opportunity to be in at the get-go, providing insight right then rather than feedback when it might be too late.

I’m looking into ways that Blacks Connect can use it which don’t involve videos of me in my onesie, at my laptop with a cat for company.

In the meantime, why not explore what other businesses are doing with this type of technology and feedback on how you think it might be of benefit in the advisory world.

Until then, Down Periscope.

Which is incidentally a very poor film starring Kelsey Grammer.
