Miliband attacks PM’s Housing Benefit plans
Following this morning’s prime minister’s questions, Ed Miliband stepped up his campaign against cutting Housing Benefit for people out of work for 12 months.
Earlier today, Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Douglas Alexander, wrote to Labour party members, encouraging them to join the campaign.
He is expected to hold a summit tomorrow with representatives of housing organizations and charities to hear their views on the issue.
He said: “David Cameron further raised the stakes and divided his coalition today, by confirming his policy to punish those who can’t find work by cutting the cash that they get to help with housing costs.”
He added: “Although he is clearly not listening to the Liberal Democrats, we are ready to work with all sides of the House to defeat these unfair plans.”
The Prime Minister defended the government’s proposal, insisting it was “not fair” that claimants lived in properties many workers could only “dream of.”
