Mortgage broker fined £435 for Olympic ticket touting
A German mortgage broker has been fined £435 for trying to sell £23,000 worth of Olympics tickets on the streets of London.

Wolfgang Menzel, was arrested by police after he was caught selling tickets to the opening ceremony for £1,000, reported the Daily Mail.

Yesterday, Stratford Magistrates Court heard how Menzel had tried to sell 31 tickets for various events after purchasing tickets in Germany.

Menzel insisted he was a ‘genuine sports fan’ who planned to attend events but got carried away buying too many tickets.

He explained to police that he had tried selling opening ceremony tickets because his family were unable to attend.

According to Nicole Lody, defending, Menzel “wasn’t aware that he couldn’t sell [tickets] in the UK because in Germany tickets are being advertised very widely on the internet and eBay.”

Menzel has been fined £435, asked to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £85 court costs after admitting a charge of ticket touting at Stratford magistrates’ court.

The maximum penalty for ticket touting at the London Games is a fine of £20,000.
