A large number of applicants hoping to become the next Bank of England (BoE) governor are from India, including one who is serving a prison sentence, The Times reported.
It said the deadline for job applications passed yesterday, and the number of ‘credible candidates’ was less than ten, according to sources.
BoE deputy governor Paul Tucker, Financial Services Authority chairman, Lord Turner and Oxford economist Sir John Vickers are all in the running.
The Times reported the job had also attracted great interest in India – however it is thought some applicants regularly apply for every job listed in the Economist.
It said the prisoner applicant is considered to be unsuitable for the role.
