Labour hatches plan to clampdown on rogue landlords
The Labour party has floated plans to create a national landlords register to drive up standards in the private rented sector.

A policy review found that around 500,000 families and over 100,000 pensioners were currently living in substandard rented accommodation.

Labour has now proposed the creation of a register for landlords that would see serious offenders removed and barred from renting properties. It hopes the plans will lead to increase quality across the burgeoning rental sector.

Government figures show that more than a third of rented accommodation does not meet adequate standards for repair or facilities including insulation and heating.

Shadow housing minister Jack Dromey said that the Labour party was eager to increase standards among landlords.

“The private rented sector has an important role to play in meeting housing need,” he said.

“But too many tenants are in poor and sometimes dangerous homes. That’s why Labour has set out proposals to drive standards up and bad landlords out.”

Figures from many sectors have welcomed the move including Ian Peters, managing director of residential energy at British Gas: “With buying a home now out of reach for many families, renting is becoming increasingly more important so new ideas about how we can improve standards in the sector are welcome.

“At British Gas we visit many landlords that do a great job but there is a minority element who can put their tenants lives at risk through poor understanding of safety standards.”
