The latest housing market survey from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) found that the amount of new buyers entering the market grew at its fastest level in four years in July. More than half (53%) of RICS members have reported an increase in demand since the start of the year.
The West Midlands and the North East experienced the biggest rises in buyer activity but house prices in all regions grew.
The organisation said that government schemes such as Help to Buy had enticed buyers back into the market and that confidence had spread from London and the South East to the whole country in recent months.
More than half (53%) of surveyors predict sales will continue to grow in the next three months while a while a third believe that will be matched by continuing house price growth.
RICS global residential director Peter Bolton King said: “These results are great news for the property market as it looks like at long last a recovery could be around the corner.
“Growth in buyer numbers and prices have been happening in some parts of the country since the beginning of the year but this is the first time that everywhere has experienced some improvement. It is clearly good news that those parts of the property market that were struggling are at last showing some signs of life.”
