Legal & General (L&G) has gained Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accreditation on its business protection workshops for advisers.

The insurer said educating advisers about business protection was important as there were around 4.9m private sector business in the UK and 99% of these are SMEs with less than 50 employees.

Most of these firms would have their future affected by the loss of a key person or business owner and would benefit most from advice on business protection, L&G said.

Richard Kateley, head of specialist protection at Legal & General said he hoped L&G’s adviser support would help to grow the insurance market.

Kateley said: “By seeking and gaining the CII stamp of approval we wanted to demonstrate our desire to grow the market overall and not just our share of it.

“I believe that it falls to the protection industry as a whole to raise the awareness of the risks SMEs in the UK could face if they lost a key person or business owner and to make sure that their protection needs are recognised, explained and fully met and I hope that the work we do with advisers, through our workshops will help to drive this.”
