MIMHC urges industry to discuss mental health
The Mortgage Industry Mental Health Charter (MIMHC) is encouraging lenders and those in related sectors to take part in a national 'Time to Talk Day'.

The campaign on 3 February this year aims to bring friends, families, communities, and workplaces together to talk, listen and change lives by simply starting a conversation.

The initiative aimed to create supportive communities via conversations with family, friends, or colleagues about mental health. The campaign is run by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness in partnership with Co-op in England; the Scottish Association for Mental Health and See Me in Scotland; Inspire and Change Your Mind in Northern Ireland; and Time to Change Wales in Wales.

MIMHC said that as part of a commitment to raising awareness and improving wellbeing within the mortgage and finance sector, it would encourage its members to hold meaningful interactions.

The organisation said it provided mental health-related guidance and resources for its members and that it would create dedicated access this year to mental health experts, offer exclusive webinars from wellbeing professionals and provide access to member discounts on mental health first aid training.

Companies, it also said, would be participating in ‘Cuppa with a Colleague’, where team members are encouraged to take time out of their day to have a conversation with someone they may not usually speak with, even those who work in a different team or department.

The chats, MIMHC said, did not need to focus on mental health, but said they were an opportunity to strengthen a bond with another colleague.

Some sites will have wellness materials on hand for staff and qualified mental health first aiders available needing support or a confidential environment to discuss hurdles they may be facing.

MIMHC was established in 2021 as a non-profit collaboration by Crystal Specialist Finance, Coreco, Chartwell Mortgage Services, Landbay, The Brightstar Group, Knowledge Bank and SimplyBiz Mortgages.

Members of the charter commit to uphold six key pledges aimed at improving working conditions and opening up conversations about mental health practices within mortgage businesses.
