Award-winning journalist and former government adviser Lord Daniel Finkelstein OBE has been announced as the keynote speaker for this year’s Association of Short Term Lenders (ASTL) conference.

Finkelstein was an adviser to both John Major, during his time as prime minister, and to former Conservative party leader William Hague. He is currently executive editor, columnist and chief leader writer at The Times.

At the ASTL conference he will deliver a speech including anecdotes from his time on the political frontline and an insight into the political scene and thoughts for the future.

“In my opinion, there has rarely been a moment when politics in Britain has been so exciting,” said Finkelstein.

“From Labour’s leadership to Tory troubles, things keep changing from one moment to the next. So how does business find a steady path through the battlefield? By understanding how politics works.”

The theme of this year’s event, to be held at Painter’s Hall in London on 22 September, will be ‘Lending in an uncertain world’ and will address the changing world of the mortgage market.

Benson Hersch, chief executive of the ASTL said that Finkelstein’s speech should help businesses in the bridging industry to negotiate the “uncertainties to come”.

The full seminar line-up for the conference is set to be announced in the coming weeks.
