Industry veteran Paul Smee has been appointed group chair of the Finance & Leasing Association (FLA) Lending Code.

He has extensive experience in financial services and was previously the director general of the Council of Mortgage Lenders from 2011 to 2017, when it was absorbed into UK Finance.

Smee has also been chair of the Conveyancing Association since 2018. He previously ran the UK Payments Council and the Association of Independent Financial Advisors, and has been a non-executive director of the Regulator of Social Housing, the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission, Money Advice Trust and the Residential Landlords Association.

Stephen Haddrill, director general of the FLA, said: “We’re very pleased to have Paul join us. His experience and insights, particularly across financial regulation, are outstanding and will be much valued by colleagues.”

Smee (pictured) said: “The FLA Code demonstrates the seriousness with which FLA members treat good customer service and outcomes. I am delighted to be associated with it and to assist in the next phase of its development.”

The FLA Lending Code has been in place for 30 years and is for customers taking out or thinking of taking out a consumer credit loan or second charge mortgage with a member of the FLA. It details good practice for lending and how consumers should expect to be treated.
