Know Your BDM: Graham Wallace, Virgin Money
Mortgage Solutions’ Know Your BDM series gives brokers the chance to get to know their local business development managers a little better.

We ask BDMs up and down the country for their answers to the following 10 questions. In this edition Graham Wallace, Virgin Money BDM for the Glasgow region, is under the spotlight.

How many brokers do you see in a week?
I visit 20 to 25 brokers in an average week and speak to many more over the phone and I’m always available on the phone for anybody needing help.

What issues come up time and time again?
I’m sure it won’t come as a big surprise that MMR is the big talking point at the moment. As Virgin Money has been MMR ready for some time most of my conversations recently have been around supporting my brokers as they consider how it will impact their business.

The two main topics within the MMR are affordability requirements and where brokers can get our latest policy information.

Favourite part of your job?
I enjoy all parts of my job working for Virgin Money. I specifically enjoy being able to resolve issues for my brokers and helping them and their clients meet their deadlines.

Biggest challenge?
I am tempted to say trying to get parked in the West End of Glasgow but on a more serious note, I would say it’s making sure brokers are fully aware of our lending policy and packaging requirements to make the application process for them as smooth as possible.

Strangest question you’ve ever been asked?
Back in the day when we had income multiples I got asked – “I’ve got a client who earns £20,000 and your multiple says 3x income – How much can he borrow?”

What do you wish brokers understood about your job?
Talking to me before and not after submitting those “quirky” cases, will result in a much smoother journey for the broker and their client.

Last film you saw at the cinema?
Captain Phillips – worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.

Least favourite sport?
Cricket.

Current mobile phone?
Blackberry Torch.

Favourite biscuit?
It’s hard to beat a four finger Kit Kat…!
