Know Your BDM: Stuart Bryce, Mansfield Building Society
Mortgage Solutions’ Know Your BDM series gives brokers the chance to get to know their local business development managers a little better.

We ask BDMs up and down the country for their answers to the following 10 questions. In this edition Stuart Bryce of Mansfield Building Society is under the spotlight.

How many brokers do you see in a week?

I try and have at least three days per week meeting brokers with the remainder being in the office. I can be meeting brokers directly or working with the networks to maximize the distribution opportunities.

Personal service is important to us and whilst I’m meeting clients during the week, I also try to make sure I’m available for our intermediary sales support that is available for brokers on a case-by-case basis.

What issues come up time and time again?

We’re seeing an increase in enquiries where greater lending flexibility is required, whether it’s the overall term of the mortgage or niche criteria. We’re certainly in an age where people have very individual circumstances and we’re trying to respond to meet their needs.

Favourite part of your job?

I love meeting people and making things happen. I’m relatively new to the role, having come from a broker background, and I’m really enjoying bringing a fresh perspective to the Society. It’s also great to make new contacts and develop relationships.

Biggest challenge?

When customers have very individual circumstances, it can be a challenge making sure that we have the right range of products to fit. We’ve recently improved our Complex Prime offer which is available through our distributors and packagers, so if brokers do feel that they’ve got a worthwhile case that they’re struggling to place, we may be able to help.

Strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

Given the variety of individual financial circumstances that are around, I’m getting more used to the many curveballs we get.

What do you wish brokers understood about your job?

Not all lenders are the same and I’m here to try and help brokers meet the needs of their clients. I’d like more brokers to understand that we’re a people-orientated building society keen to support the intermediary market.

Last film you saw at the cinema?

As a father of two, I don’t get as much time to go to the cinema as much as I’d like.

Least favourite sport?

I like most sports, although I’m not a fan of American Football and Crown Green Bowling seems pretty boring to me.

Current mobile phone?

I currently have an iPhone for personal use and a Samsung S4 Mini for business.

Favourite biscuit?

Dark chocolate Hobnobs are probably my favourite.
