It has been 20 years since the inaugural British Mortgage Awards (BMA). To date, it recognises individual excellence in the mortgage industry.

We spoke to some of our first winners to reflect on their career, achievements and industry changes since then.

Here we speak to John Cupis, managing director at Dynamo and Next Intelligence and recipient of the 2006 Mortgage Club Award.

What do you remember the 2006 British Mortgage Awards? What stands out most when you think back to the night?

It was at the Royal Albert Hall, what a venue to kick off the BMAs and a prestigious location for these awards.  Just standing there on that stage was a real honour.

What did it mean to win at the inaugural British Mortgage Awards?

It was the first people-based awards, so to win at the ground-breaking event was an additional honour.

Looking back, what was the intermediary mortgage market like in 2006 compared to today?

We were pre-credit crunch, so the market was buoyant, customer pricing was keen and the general mood was positive. It was not set to last, but great in the moment.

In your view, what has been the single biggest change in the mortgage industry over the past 20 years?

Hard to pick one between regulation and technology. Massive changes in both – tough to call.

If you could give one message to this year’s winners, what would it be?

Enjoy the moment, reflect on your achievements and those of your colleagues around you who helped you.
