McClean joins from FCMB Bank, where he was head of treasury, and has previously held senior treasury roles, including responsibility for regulatory reporting, at the Bank of London, Wesleyan Bank, Al Rayan Bank and Commerzbank.
Afin Bank said McClean will oversee the continued development of the bank’s financial strategy.
McClean (pictured) said: “What I liked about Afin Bank was its clarity of purpose, that it has been created to fill really obvious gaps in the market and help borrowers who fall into those gaps. I also liked the opportunity to start with a blank sheet to build our strategy and systems, with no legacy issues.
“Being in a small and growing bank, you get to see everything and work closely with everyone in all departments, from product development through to managing our liquidity. Decisions that are made in treasury impact the entire bank.”
Afin Bank provides residential and buy-to-let (BTL) mortgages to borrowers under-served by mainstream lenders because of their circumstances, such as the self-employed, qualified professionals, high-net-worth (HNW) customers and foreign nationals working in the UK on valid visas. It also offers a range of Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)-protected fixed-term savings accounts.

Charles Resnick, CFO at Afin Bank, said: “It is great to have Simon onboard with his wealth of experience in both start-up banks and larger organisations. Simon’s knowledge will help us continue to grow our treasury capabilities, as well as ensuring we continue to deliver the reporting requirements in an evolving environment.
“As Afin develops over the years to come, with new products for both our lending and savings propositions, Simon and the rest of the finance team will play important roles in ensuring the bank remains robust and grows safely and effectively.”
