The Black Mortgage Professionals and Allies Network (BMPAN) has launched a new industry framework aimed at helping organisations and individuals take practical steps towards improving racial equity across the mortgage sector.

The new standard has been built around a framework known as COIL, which stands for Collaboration, Opportunity, Inclusion and Leadership.

The BMPAN said the framework is designed to provide organisations with a practical approach to promoting racial equity and improving access to career development and progression opportunities.

The BMPAN Standard was unveiled at the organisation’s second anniversary and Black History Month celebration on 7 October.

Founded by Atlyn Forde (pictured, right), Aleka Gutzmore (pictured, left) and Jeffrey Krampah-Williams (pictured, middle), the BMPAN said its network has grown to more than 500 mortgage professionals and allies since launching.

Alongside the launch of the standard, the BMPAN introduced an ambassador programme aimed at encouraging supporters to promote the network, make industry connections, spotlight talent and raise awareness of opportunities for underrepresented groups.

The organisation has also established a new advisory panel and a marketing and communications working group.

Industry standard to drive progress

Under the framework, collaboration focuses on sharing learning and driving progress across organisations and networks.

Opportunity centres on increasing access to development, sponsorship, visibility and career progression, while inclusion emphasises creating environments where people feel respected, valued and able to contribute.

Leadership, meanwhile, encourages individuals and businesses to use their influence to challenge barriers and support change. Organisations and individuals can sign up as supporters of the standard, while partnership and sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Commenting on the launch, the BMPAN’s co-founders said the network remained focused on recognising the people whose support and advocacy can have a significant impact on career progression, while helping organisations turn commitments to racial equity into practical action.
