Swansea Building Society has appointed Nathan Griffiths as deputy chief executive to work alongside chief executive Alun Williams.

The mutual said the appointment reflected Swansea Building Society’s long-term succession planning and leadership development strategy.

Griffiths joined Swansea Building Society as finance director in July 2019.

Both a Chartered Accountant and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Griffiths has built his career across retail banks, building societies and challenger banks.

He began his career in Deloitte’s Financial Services Assurance and Advisory practice, where he spent eight years specialising in the banking and building society sector. Griffiths then joined Monmouthshire Building Society in 2015 as group financial controller, before taking on wider leadership responsibilities. He joined Swansea Building Society four years later.

As finance director, Nathan held executive responsibility for finance, treasury, IT and HR. He has also worked closely with the board and senior leadership team on the mutual’s long-term strategy and wider commercial and organisational priorities.

Williams said: “Succession planning is something we have given considerable thought and attention to as a society. It is important that we continue to develop our leadership team and ensure we have the experience, skills and capabilities in place to support the society’s long-term future.

“Nathan has made a significant contribution since joining us in 2019. His knowledge of the building society sector, his understanding of our business and his involvement in shaping our strategy make him a strong choice for this appointment. He has demonstrated a real commitment to the society and its members, and this is a natural next step in his development as a senior leader.”

Griffiths added that he was incredibly proud to take on the role as deputy chief executive and looks forward to the prospects ahead for the mutual.

He added: “We have achieved a great deal, but there is also a huge amount of opportunity ahead of us. What is important to me is that as we continue to grow and evolve, we retain the values, relationships and focus on our members that make the society what it is.”
