Brokers say base rate rise may not bring remortgage rush
With the Bank of England expected to hold rates at a historic low for another month, whether we see a rise or not, brokers do not expect a boost to their remortgage business prospects.

A survey of 615 mortgage intermediaries found that 55% do not expect any significant increase in remortgage business ahead of the first Base Rate rise.

However, 45% are expecting remortgaging prospects to brighten later this year.

Charles Morley, head of sales at Kensington (pictured), said: “There is great opportunity now for mortgage intermediaries to talk to clients about their options and the benefits of acting sooner rather than later. Even if this does not resonate with some customers at the moment it will start a dialogue and could put intermediaries at front of mind when those clients do decide to remortgage.”

Kensington said its message to intermediaries was be proactive and don’t wait for external factors to change.

“You have access to a wealth of products, providing good value for real people with a range of different circumstances that may not be available direct to customers on the high street. Make use of those products and you could create incremental growth for your business even in the current tough climate,” said Morley.
