Morocco mortgage cyclists smash fundraising target
Two mortgage bosses have helped raise more than £32,000 for mental health by cycling from London to Morocco and got a message of support from The Queen along the way.

Legal & General Mortgage Club managing director Ben Thompson (pictured) and Investec Professional Mortgages head of distribution Charles Morley joined other cyclists to cover 1,800 miles across France and Spain in just over two weeks. They had aimed to raise £25,000 for the charity Rethink Mental Illness.

The Queen, the prime minister David Cameron and Olympics organiser Sebastian Coe were among the hundreds who sent the cyclists messages of support.

Injuries aside, Thompson said everything went to plan and the team reached home safely: “I am personally deeply moved by all the comments of support, as well as the letters I’ve received in confidence from many that have suffered from mental illness, or have friends or family that have suffered. All of this makes us as a team very proud to have made a small contribution in terms of raising awareness of mental health.

“We are all grateful to the very many people that have given generous support to us, in particular a big thanks to Investec, Legal & General and Incisive Media.”

The team had to battle mislaid passports, bad weather and cavorting Spanish couples to reach their destination of Tangiers.

Morley said the trip had been a life-changing experience: “Everyone has completed this epic challenge and the support we have had a from a great many people has been unbelievable. We are glad we chose to be the main sponsor of the Tour De 4 event.”
