This week, Mortgage Solutions speaks to Laz Doel, key account manager at Gen H.

Which locations and how many advisers and broker firms do you cover in your role at Gen H?

I work directly with 24 brokerages across the country.

What personal talent/skill is most valuable in doing your job?

Building trusting relationships and problem-solving.

What personal talent/skill would you most like to improve on?

I’m great at catching, but terrible at juggling, so, juggling.

What’s the hardest part of your job?

Keeping calm and serene when navigating the UK’s roads!

What do you love most about your job?

Meeting people from all walks of life and helping the everyday person buy a home.

Are there any (popular) misconceptions about your job/role?

That we just sit around drinking coffee all day.

What’s the best bit of career-related advice you’ve ever been given? Who gave it to you?

Every person you meet knows something you don’t – so learn from them.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career?

Always get all the facts instead of committing to a decision on judgement alone.

How do you keep up to date with developments in the market?

I keep up a constant diet of lender news, finance news, and hearing people moaning about their house purchase on the school run.

What is the most quirky/unique property deal you’ve been involved in?

The client was a very humble man who bought a small flat on a roundabout, in a deprived area, all while earning a six-figure income – he said he had everything he needed.

What was your motivation for choosing this career?

Being able to have a real impact on helping more people buy a home while building meaningful relationships. Saying yes when tradition says no.

If you could do any other job in the property sector, what would it be and why?

Interior designer – but I would be terrible at it because I can’t visualise anything that isn’t in front of me already.

What did you want to be growing up?

I wished I was a little bit taller, I wished I was a baller…

How do you think your job will change in five years?

I feel the job will become more about listening to specific needs for those who don’t fit the typical high street buyer mould.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I would love to be able to type 50 words consecutively at speed without having to press ‘delete’ five times in the process.

What do you do to unwind?

Being in nature trumps all, so woodland walks are always a winner – but above all, anything that allows me to spend time with the family.

What is your greatest skill(s), either work- or non-work-related?

A reflex catch… I hardly ever let my food touch the ground when dropped.

And finally, what’s the strangest question you’ve ever been asked?

“Is this a question?” This was an actual question in one of my psychology exams.
