The number of jobless people in the UK fell by 43,000 from February to April this year to 1.81m in the last quarter.

According to the Office of National Statistics, figures showed 31.05m people aged 16 and over are in work, which equates to 73.4% of the population. This month marks a rise of 424,000 on the year and 114,000 on the quarter.

The average UK weekly wage has risen to £493 with bonuses or £462 without.

Nick Dixon, investment director at Aegon UK, said this uptick will be warmly received after the trudge of slow growth.
“As well as the immediate relief of more money in pockets, it also spells good news for long term savings. People pay a proportion of their salary into their savings, so if pay-packets increase, so do their monthly contributions. While many may think this is just a small step in improving short-term savings, it’s another leap in securing people’s future financial wellbeing.”
