Bridging the generation gap: How to overcome obstacles in the later life lending market

It’s all about education, education, education

Tuesday 31st October
12.30pm – 1.15pm

The later life lending market is broad and growing. With an ageing population and people working longer, there’s a real opportunity with clients remortgaging, wanting to free up funds to help support their children or grandchildren and seeking an alternative to equity release. Education and flexibility are fundamental to unlocking the potential with older clients – particularly understanding the power of manual underwriting and how other sources of income, such as pension pots, can be used in retirement.

Darren Deacon, head of intermediary sales, Family Building Society
Nathan Waller, business development manager, Family Building Society

Nathan Waller, business development manager, Family Building Society

Nathan Waller joined Family Building Society in 2017 after being a mortgage broker for over six years and covers East Anglia and Kent. Having advised previously he understands the value of a good BDM and always strives to give his brokers and their clients the best possible outcomes, especially when dealing with older clients who need a common sense approach to their circumstances.

Darren Deacon, head of intermediary sales, Family Building Society

Darren Deacon joined Family Building Society in 2017 as a business development manager covering the Midlands and was promoted to head of intermediary sales in 2022. He has over 34 years of financial services experience and has worked for both high street and specialist lenders. Deacon has worked as an underwriter, mortgage adviser and latterly within mortgage business development, and now leads a team of eight BDMs. In his current role, he uses his extensive experience and knowledge of the mortgage market to deliver lending solutions for the older borrower. Deacon is a firm believer in providing excellent customer service and thinks it is the best, and perhaps the only, way to build lasting business relationships.
