Nationwide has announced plans to launch and fund an affordable housing website offering prospective buyers a single place to search for a property by postcode and find a mortgage to buy it.

The website will be launched in the Summer in partnership with the Building Societies Association and brings property listings, shared equity mortgage deals and housing association schemes from across the UK together on one searchable website for the first time.

All lenders will be able to check developments to check their criteria fits and customers can search a postcode region for homes and see a list of the mortgage deals available for a home they like.

Housing providers, including building firms and housing associations, will be able to upload the details of properties and cross-check details to make sure mortgages are available to fund the purchase.

“The website will result in further transparency, standardisation and simplification in what is a complex part of the market,” said a Nationwide spokesperson.

Andy McQueen, divisional director for mortgages and insurance at Nationwide said the building society plans to promote the site before launch.

“Support for homeownership and in particular the first-time buyer is core to the building society model. We all need to do a lot more,” said McQueen, at the BSA conference where the lender announced its plans.
