Aviva pays out over £513m in protection claims in 2014
Over half a billion pounds (£513m) was paid out to Aviva customers in 2014 through claims on life insurance, critical illness and income protection cover.

According to its latest claims statistics, Aviva paid 99% of life insurance, 93.2% critical illness and 93.2% of income protection claims in 2014, covering 14,805 customers and their families.

Of critical illness claims that were not settled, 1.2% were declined due to misrepresentation (non-disclosure), and 5.6% for conditions not met.

The total amount paid out in 2014 was equivalent to around £1.4m worth of claims a day, or almost £1,000 a minute, Aviva said.

Life protection continued to be the most claimed for insurance, with £340m paid out to families of those who had died or been diagnosed with a terminal illness – a total of 11,198 families.

In comparison, 2,246 customers received payments for critical illness totalling almost £161m, while 1,361 income protection claims were paid for of over £12m.

Louise Colley, protection director at Aviva (pictured), said: “No one ever wants to claim against this type of policy, but knowing that we are committed to paying claims wherever possible provides families with the reassurance and comfort they need if the worst does happen.

“Almost 40,000 families have benefitted from payments in the last three years, with payments totalling more than £1.5 bn. Our commitment to our customers is simple, and remains the same as always, we will continue to enhance our protection products whilst making the claims process as quick and straightforward as possible.”
