Nationwide’s quarterly review of house prices has indicated increases of 0.9% in March and 3% during the first quarter. The forecast for the year has also been amended from the originally predicted 6% to a more buoyant 10%.

Alex Bannister, group economist at Nationwide, said: ‘The housing market continues to show strong price increases, with the price of an average UK property up 0.9% during March following a 1.6% increase a month ago. Buyers have become used to double digit house price growth underpinning demand for property.
