Rumour has it that last night’s match between Brazil and North Korea was only going to be broadcast to the North Korean population if their team won. What surprised me was that the commentators spoke about this like it was a bad thing.

I would love to be spared the heartache and frustration of watching my team fail. Imagine the impact it would have on the mood of the country if we only ever experienced England’s triumphs in tournaments and were spared the sending offs, gaffes and penalty defeats. There would be dancing in the streets, the crime rate would fall, we may have even avoided recession. Maybe.

But it is a shame to think that the people of North Korea will be unable to watch their sides commendable performance against the number one team in the world in what was probably the most entertaining game of the tournament so far. It was also the only match to boast a goal scorer named after Michael Douglas – Brazil’s right back Maicon Douglas Sisenando – although I doubt that fact would hold too much significance in North Korea.

Today sees favourites Spain enter the fray and the end of the first round of matches. With all the team’s having taken to the pitch it will be the first real opportunity to get a true indication of how your fantasy World Cup side is faring. So don’t forget to log on and find out how your team is doing.
