Brokers feel the threat of aggregators

The internet and comparison sites are seen as one of the biggest threats to business by 28% of brokers, according to Assurant Intermediary.

The research found that, despite the wide range of products on offer from aggregators, just 20% of the brokers polled cross-sell general insurance products that are more difficult to compete on, such as travel or pet insurance.

Yet, 91% do currently sell cover including buildings and contents, landlords, tenant contents, legal expenses, home emergency, critical illness or life insurance.

In order to help intermediaries compete with comparison sites on general insurance, Assurant Intermediary has created a free link to ProtectYourBubble.com, a website offering a range of general insurance products.

Sales that result from a client visiting ProtectYourBubble.com via the link on a broker’s website will result in a fee for the broker. Brokers will also receive a fee for renewals.

Kevin Paterson, sales and marketing director for Assurant Intermediary, said: “Competing with the comparison websites on price has been a major barrier in the past. This link provides an opportunity for intermediaries to consider all general insurance products as part of their portfolio.

“We know that the appetite is there for these products. For example, only 16% of brokers said they currently offer pet insurance, but 84% confirmed they would be willing to consider it. Our link with Protect Your Bubble.com can help ensure that intermediaries no longer miss out on these valuable new income generators.”
