Government plans to issue cladding remediation code of practice this summer
The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities is planning to “co-develop” a cladding remediation code of practice for publication this summer.

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department for Levelling Up Lee Rowley (pictured) said that the government planned to work with residents, the housing and construction sectors, and oversight bodies on the code.

He added that it would set out the “impact of remediation works on residents and provide guidance and support for industry on how to take account of residents’ needs”.

Rowley also noted that the code of practice would “make clear to residents what they can expect during the remediation process”.

The answer was in response to a question from Conservative MP for Ipswich Tom Hunt about when the department planned to introduce a code of practice for cladding remediation.

More government action on cladding and leasehold

The government has been taking more action on cladding, with developers due to sign remediation contracts for around 1,500 buildings.

They were given a six-week deadline to sign agreements earlier this year, with the warning of “significant consequences” if they failed to do so.

The six largest mortgage lenders have also said that they will lend on properties needing cladding remediation as long as there is evidence of self-remediation, coverage from government schemes or protections from the Building Safety Act.

Secretary of State for Levelling Up Michael Gove also said that he plans to introduce leasehold reform in the next parliamentary session.

The Department for Levelling Up declined to comment.
