The role of business development manager has become critical for brokers since the downturn, said Aldermore.

Speaking at the Buy to Let Market Forum in Manchester, Robert Barnard, head of intermediary distribution at Aldermore, said BDMs are an essential source of industry intelligence and should be used as much as possible.

“The days of coffee and football chat are gone. These guys are vital nowadays,” he said.

During the lender panel, lenders agreed that the BDM was critical to the mortgage process.

In an audience poll taken yesterday in Manchester, mortgage advisers were asked if they thought the quality of mortgage lender BDMs had risen since the credit crunch.

In a damning result, just 20-30% of the audience thought they had.

Paragon’s head of sales, Moray Hulme also said in his presentation that the lender was currently recruiting for a BDM for the London area.
