Return of investment for advice firms from online and technology-based propositions have been “extremely mixed”, Tenet has reported.

The network has seen the two extremes of outcomes from investing in online presence; those that have reaped the rewards; and those that have not seen any return.

Keith Richards, group distribution and development director at Tenet, said: “There is no question that search engine optimisation and online business is a growing opportunity. But we are seeing very mixed results at the moment.

“We have seen those that do very well, but also those that are very disheartened after so much has been invested.”

He said the network had a number of firms at the moment that were trying to utilise the web more to attract new clients.

“It is all about how advisers are putting their propositions together. For example, asking too many questions online early on can make people click out,” Richards explained.

“It often pays to get expert advice if advisers do not have particular experience of e-commerce.”
