Yorkshire Building Society has achieved record gross mortgage lending growth of 13%, reaching £7.6bn in 2014.

Net lending at the building society increased 32% on 2013 to £2.6bn, according to its 2014 financial results.

Yorkshire BS said it helped 34,800 people purchase a home through a residential mortgage while providing support for a record 8,200 first-time buyers, compared to 7,400 in 2013.

However, despite its strong mortgage lending figures, the building society recorded a 5.5% drop in its profits before tax compared to 2013, falling from £199.3m to £188.2m in 2014.

Chris Pilling, Yorkshire Building Society Group’s chief executive said he was “proud” of the results but acknowledged the lender’s previous failures.

“Our passion for customers is reflected in the 34,800 mortgages we completed during the year – including a record 8,200 to first-time buyers – and the competitive return we provided savers which beat the market average.

“We must acknowledge that, as well as delivering excellent products and service in 2014, we were fined twice by our regulator for previously letting customers down. We have apologised for our errors, taken action to fix those problems swiftly and decisively and reimbursed those affected, which demonstrates our absolute commitment to fair outcomes for customers.”
