The Nottingham Building Society has hired Anthony Murphy as its chief financial officer (CFO), taking over from Paul Astruc.

The appointment is subject to regulatory approval and Murphy is set to join the mutual in March this year.

In his role, he will lead the finance team and will continue the mutual’s “strong financial performance and drive strategic growth”.

Murphy was previously Tandem Bank’s CFO, having worked there for just over four years. During his time there, he navigated the business through a strategic review, moved to a new core banking platform, closed a number of capital raises and M&A activities and grew its deposit offering.

Prior to that, he was Amicus Finance’s CEO for around a year, and before that worked at the United Arab Bank for around four years in various roles including CFO and head of strategy.

Murphy worked at Lloyds Banking Group in a variety of roles between 2002 and 2012, including finance director for the Middle East business based in Dubai. He supported its sales to HSBC.

He will work alongside Astruc, who has been CFO and board member for the last two years. Astruc is retiring to pursue a non-executive career and he will depart the mutual on 6 April.

Nottingham: ‘An eye on the future’

The Nottingham CEO Sue Haye said: “I’m delighted that Anthony is joining The Nottingham. His wealth of experience means he brings both solid foundations and genuinely innovative thinking to us at this exciting time as we build for the future.

“Anthony will be a key stakeholder in helping forecast and shape our strategic roadmap to deliver our purpose. As we welcome Anthony, I would also like to thank Paul Astruc for the integral role he has played navigating our strategic review process as CFO over the last two years.”

Murphy added: “This is a great time to be joining The Nottingham as it emerges from a thorough and exciting strategic review process, with an eye on the future. I have been hugely impressed by the vision for the Society and look forward to meeting more of the team and continuing The Nottingham’s journey.”
