Aviva in Twitter backlash over Downton ad

Good on Aviva for promoting the adverts. Unfortunately, even during entertainment television time, death is happening all around us. Even when Downton Abbey aired last night, some people in the UK would have died. Let’s just hope they all had their life cover in place and have not left their families destitute and without a TV.

Do people seriously not have better things to tweet about? Brain into gear before fingers into action? And with regards to the (incorrect) comment about the advert not being relevant to the era being portrayed – it’s doubtful that any of the adverts shown in the break had any relevance to 1916.

As Nigel noted above – death still happens, as does critical illness, fire, flood and burglaries – all those things that people think will ‘never happen to me’ and therefore don’t sufficiently cover themselves for. Finally, in these days of Freeview, Sky, Teevo etc – just press the fast forward button.

This is real life. Accidents do happen and having a good insurance policy does count. It can be the difference between keeping your home and losing it. I say well done for bringing this kind of situation to people’s attention.

HSBC rolls out 20-minute online mortgage

The DIP stage is not the problem but HSBC need to sort out the application stage. Often their direct team (both British and foreign) and their branches haven’t a clue what the other is doing.

I experienced bad customer service firsthand a few months ago when it took them four and half weeks to process my DIP to application with constant chasing by me. Great rates, but service lets them down.

Royal London: FSA ‘failed mutuals’

For most of the 90s I worked for Royal London and what an exceptional supporter of the low paid working class saver they had been for more than 100 years. Yet with the dawning of regulation and in less than 15 years, regulation killed off not just the phenomenal with-profits model, it decimated the with-profits industry.

I hope I speak for the majority when I say this but I wish more authority players would speak out so openly about the disastrous consequences of regulation. Royal London, once the flower of Mutual Insurers and darling of the policyholder has to make its way in predominantly in protection not investment. Very sad!

The £500 claim game

A worthwhile contribution from AMI. However before bringing new rules in, how about enforcing those already in place? For instance, are you aware that the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) strictly forbids unsolicited electronic communications offering these services?

Unless you have cut yourself off from the outset world it is impossible to conclude there is any claims management company (CMC) complying with this one? Come on MOJ, apply the rules.

Okay, this might be new to AFI, but the rest of the lenders have been offering these services for a while. I’m surprised that AFI have taken so long to catch up with the pack!

“Our customers want to make more financial decisions online, and we feel there is no reason that mortgages should be an exception.” How about the idea that a mortgage is an important decision that really shouldn’t be made in a faceless, non-advised environment.
