Breakfast Briefing: Lenders ‘must offer more landlord guidance’
Buy-to-let mortgage lenders should provide more help to landlords in the absence of true sources of advice, according to buy-to-let expert David Lawrenson, founder of landlord website Lettingfocus.com.

Speaking at the Mortgage Solutions Breakfast Briefing, Lawrenson said that a “trusted place of advice” for landlords is missing in the buy-to-let market and lenders should provide guides or set up devoted websites for landlords.

Lawrenson said: “Professional landlords should not be left in the hands of lettings agents.

“Whilst most letting agents are very good, letting agencies remain unregulated and there are many rogue agents who don’t do enough to find good tenants who will pay the rent or stay for the long term.

“There is space in the market for lenders to provide more information to landlords and help guide them.”

He added that, if lenders helped landlords to understand their responsibilities, they could also reduce their own risk of future arrears.
