Giant US estate agent enlists Charcol to crack UK advice market
American estate agency giant Keller Williams has opened its first of 30 planned property super-centres in London, Victoria using John Charcol brokers to give mortgage advice.

The firm wants to offer a property buying and selling strategy and estate agency service through its chain housing 200 property advice agents.

Keller Williams has signed a deal with mortgage brokerage John Charcol to provide the mortgage advice for buyers predominately based in the South East.

Morris said a major objective for Keller Williams is to improve the “somewhat fraught” relationship which typically exists between an estate agent and the mortgage broker.

Donald Morris, chairman of Keller Williams UK, said: “The complexity of buying and selling property has increased significantly over the last few years.

“We work with sellers to help them evaluate the offers they receive and to explain the finance pressures on the buyer.

“But increasingly we will work exclusively with the buyer on how to make the offer as well as where they can obtain finance to make the acquisition.”

“We are helping to coach both parties to work together to get a successful conclusion for the client so both are regarded as part of the solution and one doesn’t regard the other as being the problem,” he said.

The firm claims to be the largest real estate business in North America and owns 700 offices worldwide.

It plans to roll out around 30 offices in the UK over the next five to seven years mainly based in the South East of England but with some presence in the West Midlands, the North of England and Central Scotland.

When the property centres have become established the firm wants to move mortgage brokers in-house so they can work alongside the agents.

Morris said he is open to conversations with firms based around the UK with complimentary business strategies to his own.

“We coach and train the agents and their brokers together so they can work as a team in suggesting an overall solution for the client.

“It’s a process that takes several months. If the broker is willing invest the time we are happy to have a discussion with them.”

Walter Avrili, managing director of John Charcol, said: “We are delighted and proud to have been appointed by Keller Williams UK as partner of choice to be able to offer customers bespoke mortgage advisory solutions.

“The partnership reinforces the firm commitment, of both our organisations, to deliver ever higher standards of advice to our customers.”
