Jonathan Cornell, communications director at First Action Finance, said: “One of the main reasons that brokers agree with the proposed cap is that tax payers have to contribute excessive amounts towards benefits, so other people can live in expensive homes – and it is an unfair system.
“David Cameron mentioned that the Housing Bill was up 50% over the last five years, which is ridiculously high. A cap could help reduce this and save the economy a considerable amount of money.”
He added: “There’s no doubt that people will suffer as a result of this, however the amount given out in Benefits needs to be more closely monitored. We shouldn’t have to pay more in Housing Benefits than we spend on the whole of the police and universities.”
The proposed cap has had much controversy over the last week, with Boris Johnson demanding that David Cameron provide special measures for Londoners impacted by a proposed “draconian” cap.
The Housing Benefit cap is expected to save the government up to £500m.
