HML has announced it is to close its Scarborough office, putting at risk 136 jobs, with a further 28 potential job losses at other sites.

HML has announced that it is to close its least economically viable site at Scarborough, and focus on its four other outlets across the UK.

HML said it had reviewed every part of its business and, as a result, 164 roles at all levels were at risk of redundancy out of a total workforce of 2,037.

All 136 positions in Scarborough are affected, as well as 17 in Skipton, two in Padiham, two in Glasgow and seven in Derry.

HML will continue its planned migration of client work from its Prospect House premises in Scarborough to the other four locations, with the closure of the Scarborough site phased between June and September.

Following a process of consultation with HML’s union SURGE (Skipton Union Representing Group Employees), all employees have been informed of the new business structure and potential redundancies.

Brian Brodie, chief executive of HML, said: “This announcement is part of our strategy to ensure the business is the right shape and size to grasp future market opportunities.

“It has resulted in our decision to concentrate on enhancing the quality of service we provide our clients and their customers in four core locations.

“Regrettably, this has resulted in the decision to close the Scarborough operation. We understand the personal impact on staff and have not taken the decision lightly. However, we hope our clients and employees will recognise, that, as a responsible business we must make tough decisions that are in the long-term best interest of the majority of our employees.

“We are offering extensive support to those affected throughout the process; this includes outplacement support, on-site job search facilities and access to Vielife, a professional, independent employee assistance programme.”
