Rightmove has claimed that the scrapping of Home Information Packs (HIPs) has been immediately felt in the housing market, with new property listings up more than 35% since the announcement of the suspension.

Rightmove recorded the new listings to its site in the seven days before and after the Government announcement on HIPs. The figures showed that new listings jumped by over a third in the week after HIPs were banned.

New listings were up across the country. Wales saw the highest increase, with the number of new properties coming to market up 66%. The lowest increase was seen in the North East at 12%.

Miles Shipside, commercial director of Rightmove, said: “We would expect to see a post-election pick-up in fresh stock coming to the site as people have been put off by the uncertainty of the election recently.

“However, 35% is a significant increase in new listings and indicates that many more speculative sellers have been encouraged to bring their properties to market since HIPs were scrapped. It seems that the additional cost and red tape were putting sellers off.”
