Broker-lender relationship in a ‘good place’ but diversity key – Bryden
The broker lender relationship is in a “good place”, but collaboration is key for issues like diversity and inclusion and sustainability to be addressed.

In a video interview, Bryden said that she thought the mortgage industry was in a “really good place” in terms of brokers and lenders “working together” and that was at “all levels of the broker journey”.

She continued: “I think that certainly on a day-to-day basis, myself and my colleagues are constantly looking to engage with our industry and share our viewpoints.”

Bryden continued that there were changes, like adoption of diversity and inclusion and sustainability, in the mortgage sector that would need “collaborative thought” adding that it “can’t come from one lender or one broker firm”.

“It takes a whole industry to come together, and I think that we’re in a really good place on that.”

Bryden added that more lenders were starting to “talk to each other” about what they could do, what the challenges were and how they could get people from a wider lens to talk about the housing market overall.

“I think we’re in a good place, but there’s always more that can be done,” she added

Pandemic had increased ‘the talent pool’

She noted that while the pandemic had been a significant challenge for the mortgage market, one of the benefits was remote working which could allow companies to “tap into a wider pool of talent out there”.

Bryden added that there was also a positive wellbeing aspect to this as well, for both lenders and brokers, as people could see more of their family and have more flexibility.

She continued: “I’d love to see the industry be even more diverse. I think if we can start to look at talent from a variety of backgrounds, whether that be their educational or social backgrounds that would allow us, as an industry, to evolve a lot quicker because you would have different thought-provoking conversations, as well as wider viewpoints and lenses on things.”
