Each week Mortgage Solutions and its sister title, Specialist Lending Solutions, pick the top comments from our readers.
This week’s comment is in response to the article: Stamp duty cuts require supply-side impetus – Clifford.
Sox said: “Interesting article, personally I think a stamp duty holiday at this moment in time is a terrible idea, I’d even go as far as to say irresponsible.
House prices are already over inflated, lenders and solicitors are struggling to cope with demand, and what we are essentially doing is encouraging people to borrow, or borrow more, at a time when interest rates are significantly increasing along with what we know are going to be hard financial times ahead.
“The last crash came off the back of an environment where people were encouraged to borrow more than they could afford to pay. Yes, it was done by ‘non-regulated’ mortgages, but does that mean if we walk into it with our eyes wide open this time, that it will be ok?”
