Barclays confirms further branches will close this year
Barclays has confirmed a further 15 bank branches will close this April.

The high street banking giant is the first of the major lenders to announce more branch closures this year.

It has targeted 15 branches in the latest cull, including in London, the North and one branch in Wales as it looks to adapt as customers move away from in-person banking.

In total in 2022, Barclays confirmed it would close 132 branches, with the majority of closures taking place during the year.

Meanwhile, LINK data revealed more than 600 bank branch closures were announced during 2022, across brands including Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, Nationwide Building Society, HSBC, Barclays, RBS, Natwest and Danske Bank.

Earlier this year, in an open letter to the Treasury, campaign group Which?, along with a coalition of organisations, charities, industry bodies and MPs, highlighted their concern about the decline in access to, and acceptance of cash in the UK.

Last month, the major high street banks launched Cash Access UK to provide customers and businesses with free access to cash, deposits and basic banking services.

‘Maintaining community presence’

According to Barclays, it has the largest network of alternative branch sites – Barclays Local – in libraries, community and shopping centres with 200 of these in total.

A Barclays spokesperson, said: “Our customers’ behaviour has changed significantly in recent years, with the majority choosing online banking. As we adapt, we are closing less well-used branches whilst investing in brilliant customer service and digital technology.

“We are maintaining our community presence with alternative options for customers who still require in-person support. This includes our network of Barclays Local sites in libraries and community centres, bank pods and mobile vans, our cashback without purchase service, Shared Banking Hubs and everyday banking at the Post Office.”
